How to use this tuner
Start

Transpose

Tuba is already selected, at concert pitch. Orchestral and most American band parts are written at concert pitch in bass clef, whatever key your instrument is built in, so no transposition is applied. British brass band parts are the exception: E♭ and B♭ bass parts are written in transposed treble clef, so those players can select Alto Saxophone (E♭) or Trumpet (B♭) from the dropdown to see written note names.

The tuba is written at concert pitch in bass clef in orchestral music and in most American band music, regardless of whether the instrument itself is pitched in BB flat, CC, E flat, or F. Written note equals sounding note, so this tuner applies no transposition. The one significant exception is the British brass band tradition, where E flat and B flat bass parts are written in transposed treble clef, an E flat bass part sounds a major sixth plus an octave below what is written, and a B flat bass part sounds a major ninth plus an octave below. If you read those parts, switch the dropdown to Alto Saxophone (E♭) or Trumpet (B♭) and the letter names will match your page, though the octave number shown will be the sounding one.

Your main tuning slide sets overall pitch and should be adjusted only after the instrument is properly warm, brass rises in pitch as it warms, often by ten cents or more between a cold first note and a warm one twenty minutes later. Blow air through the horn and play for a couple of minutes before you touch the slide. Band players usually tune on a concert B flat; orchestral players commonly check F2 and B flat 1 as well, since the extremes of the range matter more on tuba than the tuning note alone suggests.

Once the main slide is set, the valve slides do the real work. On any non-compensating instrument the low combinations run sharp because each valve slide is cut for use on its own: 1–3 sits noticeably sharp and 1–2–3 sharper still, often twenty to forty cents. That is why tubas carry pull rings and triggers on the first and third slides, those notes are meant to be corrected while you play, not endured. A fourth valve replaces the 1–3 combination entirely and gives a much better low D, C sharp, and C; compensating instruments route the air through extra tubing on the fourth valve and largely solve the problem for you, but even then the very bottom of the range benefits from checking.

Beyond valve combinations, the tuba has predictable partial tendencies. Notes on the fifth partial tend flat and notes on the sixth partial tend sharp on most instruments. Dynamics move pitch too, and on tuba the effect is large: loud playing generally pulls pitch flat as the embouchure loosens under high airflow, while very soft playing tends to sit sharp. So tune at a realistic mezzo-forte, not at the comfortable dynamic where the horn happens to centre easily, and then check a fortissimo low note to see how far it moves.

Because low fundamentals contain a lot of energy below what small microphones handle well, give the tuner a clear, sustained note rather than a short blast, and let it settle for a second before you read it. The pitch history is especially useful here: it shows whether a long note holds level or drifts downward as your air pressure falls near the end of the breath, the single most common source of poor tuba intonation in real playing, and one no snapshot needle will ever reveal.
