The bar spans −50 to +50 cents. Zero is perfectly in tune. The history line shows where you’ve been, useful for spotting whether particular valve combinations consistently sit above or below centre.

Transpose

Euphonium is selected at concert pitch, which matches the bass clef parts used in orchestras and most American concert bands, no transposition is applied. If you read a B♭ treble clef part, as in British brass bands and many school parts, choose Trumpet (B♭) from the dropdown and the note names will match your page.

The euphonium is the instrument most likely to confuse a tuner, because the same horn is notated two entirely different ways. In orchestral writing and in most American concert band parts the euphonium reads bass clef at concert pitch: written note equals sounding note, and no transposition is applied. In British brass bands, and in a great many school and solo parts elsewhere, the euphonium reads treble clef as a B flat instrument, sounding a major ninth below what is written, so a written C sounds concert B flat an octave and a tone lower. Some players carry both versions of the same piece in their folder.

This page defaults to concert pitch, which is correct for bass clef parts. If you are reading B flat treble clef, select Trumpet (B♭) from the instrument dropdown, it applies the same B flat transposition, so the letter names the tuner shows will match the notes on your page. Either way the sounding pitch is identical; only the naming changes.

Warm the instrument before you set the main tuning slide. Brass goes sharp as it heats, so a slide adjusted on a cold horn will be wrong within ten minutes. Play for a couple of minutes, then tune on a concert B flat and confirm with a second note higher in the range. After the main slide is set, the valve slides carry the fine work. On a three-valve or non-compensating four-valve euphonium the low combinations are sharp by design: 1–3 runs noticeably sharp and 1–2–3 more so, sometimes by thirty cents or more. A fourth valve replaces 1–3 and gives a far better low E, E flat, and D; a compensating euphonium adds extra tubing on the fourth valve and largely corrects the bottom of the range automatically. If your instrument has a first-valve trigger or a movable main slide, learn which notes need it rather than lipping them into place.

Partial tendencies matter as much as valve slides. Like most conical brass, the euphonium tends flat on the fifth partial and sharp on the sixth, so the notes around concert D and F in the upper-middle register frequently need attention even with the slides correct. Dynamic level moves pitch too: loud playing tends to pull flat as the embouchure yields under high airflow, and very quiet playing tends to sit sharp. Tune at a realistic mezzo-forte and then check the same note fortissimo and pianissimo to learn how far your own playing moves.

Concert bands and brass bands generally tune to A440, and orchestras to A440, A441, or A442 depending on the ensemble; use the reference control to match rather than adjusting by feel. The most useful thing the pitch history shows a euphonium player is the shape of a long note. If the trace starts centred and slides flat over four or five seconds. That is air support falling away near the end of the breath, the commonest intonation fault in the low brass, and one a single-instant needle reading will never show you.
