The C trumpet is the standard in American orchestras and plays at concert pitch, no transposition offset. When you play a C, the tuner shows C, and the rest of the ensemble hears C. This is a meaningful practical difference from the Bb trumpet: a C trumpet player reading the same orchestral passage as a Bb player sees different note names on the page, because C trumpet parts are written at concert pitch while Bb parts are written a whole step higher. C trumpets tend to have a brighter, more penetrating tone in the upper registers, which is why they’re preferred for orchestral work where projection matters. Intonation tendencies are similar to the Bb: valve combinations involving all three valves (1+2+3) run flat on most instruments, and the open C tends sharp on many horns.
