How to use this tuner
Start

Cents

The bar spans −50 to +50 cents. Zero is perfectly in tune. The history line shows where you’ve been, on bass this matters, because a hard pluck reads sharp for a moment before the note settles at its true pitch.

Strings

The tuner reads against the nearest open string of Standard tuning (E1, A1, D2, G2), so the cents value is the distance to that string, not to the nearest chromatic note. Tap a string to hear its reference pitch and lock the tuner to it; tap again to release.

Transpose

Bass Guitar is already selected. The bass is a concert-pitch instrument, no transposition is applied, but bass parts are written an octave above where they sound, so the tuner shows the sounding octave: E1, A1, D2, G2.

Reference A

Default is A440. Tap + / to match your ensemble, A441–442 is common in orchestras, A415 for historical pitch.

The bass guitar is a concert-pitch instrument: the note name the tuner shows is the note that is actually sounding, with no transposition applied. The one thing to keep straight is the octave. Bass parts are written an octave above where they sound, so the low open E that a bassist calls “E on the bottom line” actually sounds at E1, 41.20 Hz. Standard four-string tuning is E1 (41.20 Hz), A1 (55.00 Hz), D2 (73.42 Hz), and G2 (98.00 Hz). A five-string adds a low B0 at 30.87 Hz below the E; a six-string adds a high C3 above the G. Drop D shifts the lowest string to D1 (36.71 Hz).

Low notes are genuinely harder to tune than high ones, for both ears and microphones. The fundamental of a low B sits under 31 Hz, below what most laptop speakers and many phone microphones reproduce well, and a tuner reading a weak fundamental can lock onto the second harmonic an octave up instead. Pluck firmly but not violently, roughly over the neck pickup, and let the note ring for a moment before you read it. The attack transient of a hard pluck is genuinely sharp, the string is stretched further on the first few cycles, so the pitch drops slightly as the note settles. That is exactly what the history line makes visible: an initial spike that eases down to a stable plateau is normal, and the plateau is the pitch you should be tuning.

In most ensembles the bass tunes to A440. In a band setting the practical rule is to match whatever cannot be adjusted, usually a piano, an electric keyboard, or a backing track. If you play with an orchestra that tunes to A441 or A442, use the reference control to shift the tuner rather than tuning by feel.

Three pitch problems account for most out-of-tune bass playing. The first is left-hand pressure: bass strings are under high tension and the frets are tall, so pressing harder than necessary bends the string toward the fingerboard and pushes the note sharp, especially in first position. Fret just behind the fret wire with the lightest pressure that gives a clean note. The second is intonation at the bridge, if your open strings are dead in tune but fretted notes at the twelfth fret are sharp or flat, the saddle positions need adjusting, not the tuning pegs. Compare the twelfth-fret harmonic with the fretted twelfth-fret note: they should read the same. The third is new strings. Fresh roundwounds stretch for hours; tune, play, and re-tune several times until the history line stops sliding downward between checks.

Finally, watch out for dead spots, most basses have a note or two, often around the fifth to seventh fret of the G string, where the body resonance absorbs energy and the note decays fast. Those are hard to read because the signal disappears before the tuner stabilises. Read them quickly after the attack, or check the neighbouring notes and interpolate.
