How to use this tuner
Click Start Tuning and allow microphone access. Bow a string, the tuner detects pitch in real time and shows how sharp or flat you are in cents.
The bar spans −50 to +50 cents. Zero is perfectly in tune. The history line shows where you’ve been, on cello it reveals whether pitch sags as the bow slows near the tip.
The tuner reads against the nearest open string of Standard tuning (C2, G2, D3, A3), so the cents value is the distance to that string, not to the nearest chromatic note. Tap a string to hear its reference pitch and lock the tuner to it; tap again to release.
Cello is already selected. The cello is a concert-pitch instrument, it reads bass clef (with tenor and treble clef for higher passages) and no transposition is applied, so the note the tuner shows is the note that sounds.
Default is A440. Tap + / − to match your ensemble, A441–442 is common in orchestras, A415 for historical pitch.
The cello is a non-transposing, concert-pitch instrument. Its parts are written in bass clef, moving up to tenor clef and then treble clef in higher registers, but the written pitch is always the sounding pitch, so the tuner needs no transposition and the note name you see is the note the audience hears.
The four open strings are C2 (65.41 Hz), G2 (98.00 Hz), D3 (146.83 Hz), and A3 (220.00 Hz), a stack of perfect fifths. Tune the A first, then work downward. Once the A is set, most cellists check each remaining string against its neighbour as a bowed double stop: a true perfect fifth is completely still, while a fifth that is even a few cents narrow or wide produces a slow beating you can hear before you can see it. The tuner and the double stop are complementary, the tuner gives you an absolute anchor on the A, and the fifths distribute that anchor accurately across the instrument.
Use the fine tuners on the tailpiece for small corrections and the pegs for anything larger. Steel-core strings, common on the A and D, respond so sharply to peg movement that fine tuners are almost mandatory. Gut and synthetic-core strings, more common on the G and C, move more gradually but drift far more with temperature and humidity, expect to retune after moving from a cold case into a warm hall, and again once the instrument has fully acclimatised.
Orchestras tune to a concert A given by the oboe, typically A440, though many professional ensembles sit at A441 or A442, and period-instrument groups often use A415. Use the reference control to match your group rather than tuning slightly sharp by feel. In a piano trio or with any keyboard, tune to the piano. It is the instrument that cannot be adjusted.
The pitch problems cellists actually meet are mostly bow problems. Excess bow pressure with too little bow speed presses the string sharp and chokes the tone; too little contact lets pitch sag flat, which typically shows up in the last third of a down bow as the arm extends toward the tip. Because the cello has no frets, the left hand carries the rest: first position tends to creep sharp when the hand tenses, and thumb position runs sharp for nearly everyone because the reference points are further apart than the fingers expect. Vibrato is another quiet offender, vibrato that swings above the centre pitch rather than below it makes an otherwise accurate note read consistently sharp.
Bow the string when you tune rather than plucking it. Pizzicato gives you a clean, fast reading, but it removes exactly the variables, bow weight, speed, and contact point, that will move your pitch while you are actually playing. Watch the history line across a long bow: a flat horizontal trace means the note is genuinely stable, and any consistent shape in the curve is a bow habit you can now work on directly.
