How to use this tuner

The bar spans −50 to +50 cents. Zero is perfectly in tune. The history line shows where you’ve been, essential on piccolo, where pitch climbs steadily through the first minutes of playing.
Piccolo is already selected, and no semitone transposition is applied, the piccolo uses the same letter names as concert pitch. It is an octave-transposing instrument: it sounds one octave above the written note, so the tuner shows the sounding octave, one number higher than the octave on your page.
Default is A440. Tap + / − to match your ensemble, A441–442 is common in orchestras, A415 for historical pitch.
The piccolo is an octave-transposing instrument. It uses the same letter names as concert pitch, a written A is an A, but it sounds one octave higher than written, so the written A4 that a flute plays at 440 Hz sounds A5 at 880 Hz on the piccolo. This tuner applies no semitone transposition, so the note names match your part exactly; only the octave number shown is one higher than the octave printed on the page. Written notes are kept an octave down purely to keep the part readable, which is why piccolo and flute parts look almost identical on paper and sound an octave apart.
The piccolo’s headjoint is your overall pitch control, and it is far more sensitive than a flute’s. Where a flute headjoint might need five or six millimetres to move pitch appreciably, a piccolo responds to one or two, a millimetre can be worth ten cents or more. Make adjustments in tiny increments, and mark the position that works so you can return to it. Wooden piccolos also need care about temperature and moisture: a cold wooden instrument plays flat and can crack if warmed too abruptly, so warm the headjoint gently in your hands rather than blowing hot air through a cold bore.
The defining pitch problem of the piccolo is that it goes sharp. It warms faster than any other wind instrument because there is so little metal or wood to heat, so pitch climbs steeply during the first minutes of playing and then continues to creep upward through a rehearsal. On top of that, playing louder raises pitch, and the top register is sharp by nature: from roughly the third octave upward most instruments sit noticeably above centre unless you actively correct. Combine those three and it is easy for a piccolo to end a loud tutti passage twenty or thirty cents above the rest of the orchestra, which everyone hears, because the piccolo is the highest and most exposed voice in the room.
The corrections are aerodynamic rather than mechanical. Rolling the instrument out or lifting the air stream raises pitch; rolling in, dropping the jaw slightly, or directing air further down into the embouchure hole lowers it. Faster air with a smaller aperture keeps a high note in tune at a soft dynamic without collapsing the tone. The low register has the opposite tendency. It is flat and fragile, and wants a fuller, warmer air stream and a slightly more relaxed aperture rather than more pressure.
Practically, tune after a proper warm-up, not on the first note out of the case, and tune at a realistic dynamic. Set the tuner’s reference to match your ensemble: A440 in most concert bands and many orchestras, A441 or A442 in many professional orchestras. Check a middle-register note first, then a note in the top octave, then a low note, and note how far apart those three sit, that spread, not the tuning note alone, is what determines whether you blend. Then use the history display across a long note and across a whole rehearsal: a trace that climbs steadily is the piccolo’s signature drift, and once you can see it you can push the headjoint out before anyone else notices.
