How to use this tuner
Click Start Tuning and allow microphone access. Play a note, the tuner detects pitch in real time and shows how sharp or flat you are in cents.
The bar spans −50 to +50 cents. Zero is perfectly in tune. The history line shows where you’ve been, which is how you catch an A that starts centred and creeps sharp as you blow.
Oboe is already selected. The oboe is a concert-pitch instrument in treble clef, no transposition is applied, so written pitch and sounding pitch are identical. (The English horn, by contrast, is in F; select it from the dropdown if that is what you are playing.)
Default is A440. Tap + / − to match your ensemble, A441–442 is common in orchestras, A415 for historical pitch.
The oboe is a non-transposing, concert-pitch instrument written in treble clef: written C sounds concert C, so no transposition is applied and the tuner shows exactly what sounds. That matters more for the oboe than for almost any other instrument, because in an orchestra the oboe gives the tuning A, your pitch becomes the reference everyone else adjusts to.
Almost all oboe pitch lives in the reed. A reed that is long, freshly soaked, or thickly scraped plays flat; as it is shortened, thinned at the tip, or simply broken in, its pitch rises. Crow the reed alone before you play: a well-balanced oboe reed crows around C, and a crow that sits far above or below that will fight you all rehearsal no matter what your embouchure does. Unlike a clarinet or a flute, the oboe gives you almost no mechanical tuning slide, pulling the reed a millimetre or two out of the reed well lowers pitch only slightly, and pulling further makes the octaves misbehave. Choose the reed for the pitch you need, then let the embouchure make fine adjustments rather than large ones.
Temperature is the second variable. A cold instrument with a cold reed plays flat, sometimes fifteen cents or more, and pitch rises steadily over the first minutes of playing as the bore and the reed warm. Blow warm air through the oboe before you sound the tuning A, and check the tuner again a few minutes into the rehearsal, the history line makes this drift obvious in a way a single needle reading never does.
Embouchure controls the rest. Biting or rolling the lips further in raises pitch and thins the tone; relaxing the lips and dropping the jaw lowers it. Because the range of adjustment is wide. It is easy to bring a badly pitched note into tune by force and end up with a sound that no longer blends. Tune on A4, then verify at least three other notes before deciding the reed is right: A5 an octave up, a middle-register note such as D5, and a low note such as C4 or D4.
Register tendencies are consistent across instruments. The low register, roughly B3 down to the bottom, tends to be flat and unstable, and needs a relaxed embouchure with steady, well-supported air rather than more pressure. The middle register is where most reeds sit closest to centre. The top of the range, from around D6 upward, runs sharp on almost every setup and generally wants a slightly more open embouchure and faster air rather than harder biting. Half-hole and octave-key notes around C5 and D5 are also common trouble spots, where a sluggish half-hole makes the note speak flat.
Orchestras usually sit at A440, though A441 and A442 are common in professional ensembles and much of Europe, and period-instrument groups may use A415. Concert bands generally use A440. Set the reference control to match your group before you tune, and never adjust to a number you were not asked for, as the oboe you set the standard, so the standard should be the one your conductor expects.
