How to use this tuner
Click Start Tuning and allow microphone access. Play a note, the tuner detects pitch in real time and shows how sharp or flat you are in cents.
The bar spans −50 to +50 cents. Zero is perfectly in tune. The history line shows where you’ve been, useful for spotting whether the bottom of the range sags or the notes above the break run sharp.
Baritone Saxophone (E♭) is already selected, so note names match your written part. When you play a written C, the tuner shows E♭: correct for your part, which sounds an octave and a major sixth below what is written. The octave number shown is the sounding octave, so a written middle C reads as E♭2.
Default is A440. Tap + / − to match your ensemble, A441–442 is common in orchestras and concert bands.
The baritone saxophone is an E♭ transposing instrument: a written C sounds E♭ an octave and a major sixth lower. This tuner shows written letter names so they match your part, with the octave number reflecting the sounding pitch. The bari anchors the saxophone section and often doubles the bass line, so its tuning sets the reference for everyone above it.
Warm the instrument up before you set anything. A cold bari plays flat and rises by several cents as the neck and body reach playing temperature, and on an instrument this size that takes a few minutes of real playing, not a few notes. Then set overall pitch with mouthpiece placement on the neck cork: pushing on raises pitch, pulling out lowers it. Tune on a written F or G in the middle of the staff first, then check a low note and a note above the break, because the cork sets only the average.
Saxophone intonation is shaped by embouchure firmness, air speed, and the mouthpiece and reed setup. Too relaxed an embouchure or a soft reed pulls pitch flat; biting or a stiff reed pushes it sharp. On baritone, the sheer volume of air required means players often relax as they tire and the pitch drifts down over a rehearsal. The notes just above the break, written D and E in the second octave, tend to run sharp and thin, while the very bottom of the range, low B♭ and the low A extension on instruments that have it, tends to sag when played softly and can jump sharp when pushed. The palm keys at the top run sharp as on every saxophone.
Because bari mouthpieces and reeds vary so widely between jazz and classical setups, the same instrument can sit ten cents apart depending on what is on the neck. Check your tuning whenever you change equipment, and check it again at the dynamic you actually play at: loud playing on a big mouthpiece tends flat, soft playing tends sharp.
Low notes carry much of their energy below what small microphones handle well, so give the tuner a clear, sustained tone at a moderate dynamic and let the reading settle. The pitch history display is where the bari benefits most: it shows whether a long low note holds its centre or falls as the breath runs down, and whether particular fingerings consistently land above or below the line, patterns that are easy to miss while you are also managing tone and air.
