How to use this tuner
Click Start Tuning and allow microphone access. Sing a sustained vowel, an open “ah” or “oo” works best, at a comfortable volume, and watch the note and cents display.
The bar spans −50 to +50 cents. Zero is perfectly in tune. With vibrato the needle swings either side of centre; what matters is the middle of that swing. The history line shows it as a wave, and the centre of the wave is your real pitch.
Voice is already selected, at concert pitch. Vocal music is written at pitch, so no transposition is applied. Middle C reads as C4; a tenor singing the C above reads C5, and a bass singing the C below reads C3.
Default is A440. Tap + / − to match your ensemble, A441–442 is common in orchestras, A415 for historical pitch.
Singers work at concert pitch, so the tuner applies no transposition: the note it shows is the note you are singing, with the octave number telling you where in your range you are (middle C is C4). Unlike an instrument, a voice has nothing to adjust mechanically. Everything a tuner reveals about your intonation is about hearing, breath, and the shape of the vowel, and the history line is far more useful to a singer than the needle, because a voice is never still.
Start by matching a reference. Play a note on a piano or a tone generator, sing it back on an open vowel, and see whether the tuner agrees with what your ear told you. Most singers who are “a little flat” are consistently flat by a predictable amount, and seeing the number is the fastest way to recalibrate. Then sing a scale slowly and watch each step: intervals that are habitually narrow or wide show up at once.
The history line separates the parts of a note. The first fraction of a second shows the onset, and a curve that rises into the pitch is a scoop, common and usually unwanted in classical singing, expected in some other styles. The middle shows vibrato as a regular wave: a healthy vibrato is roughly five to seven cycles a second and about half a semitone wide in total, and its centre should sit on the pitch. A wave whose centre drifts, or that gets wider as the note goes on, points to breath support. The end of the note shows whether you hold pitch to the release or let it fall.
Vowels move pitch perception more than most singers realise. Closed vowels tend to read slightly different from open ones on the same intended pitch, and a change of vowel mid-phrase can pull the pitch with it. Practise the same note across several vowels and watch what happens. Loud singing tends to push pitch up as the larynx rises; very soft singing can sag. The passaggio, where the voice shifts register, is where most tuning trouble lives, and a tuner lets you slow down and hear it.
Use the tuner as a practice tool, not a performance one: sing a phrase, look at the history afterwards, and then sing it again by ear. Choirs and ensembles usually tune to A440, some to 442; set the A = control to match. Sing at a comfortable distance from the microphone in a quiet room, and if you want to know your range, sing up and down slowly and note the lowest and highest octave numbers the tuner reads cleanly, then compare with the vocal range reference.
