How to use this tuner
Click Start Tuning and allow microphone access. Play a note — the tuner detects pitch in real time and shows how sharp or flat you are in cents.
The bar spans −50 to +50 cents. Zero is perfectly in tune. The history line shows where you’ve been — useful for seeing whether low notes settle in or whether the palm key register consistently runs sharp.
Tenor Saxophone (B♭) is already selected — note names match your written part. When you play a written C, the tuner shows B♭: a whole step below concert pitch.
Default is A440. Tap + / − to match your ensemble — A441–442 is common in orchestras and concert bands.
The tenor saxophone transposes like the Bb clarinet and trumpet — a written C sounds as concert Bb, a whole step lower — but the instrument’s larger bore and darker character create different intonation challenges. The palm key register (high D through F#) often runs sharp when pushed with too much air speed or a stiff embouchure; backing off air pressure and relaxing the jaw slightly brings these notes down. The low Bb on tenor is notoriously difficult to center — it requires a relaxed embouchure and consistent, supported air column, and without both it tends to go flat or fail to speak cleanly. Like all saxophones, the tenor is temperature-sensitive: a cold instrument plays flat until the body and neck warm to playing temperature. If you’re consistently running sharp or flat across the whole range, adjust mouthpiece position on the neck cork before anything else. The pitch history display is particularly valuable for spotting whether pitch drifts as a sustained note decays — a common pattern in lower registers where the reed vibration changes character over time.
