How to use this tuner
Start

Click Start Tuning and allow microphone access. Play a note — the tuner detects pitch in real time and shows how sharp or flat you are in cents.

Cents

The bar spans −50 to +50 cents. Zero is perfectly in tune. The history line shows where you’ve been — for bass clarinet, this reveals whether low notes settle in or drift as the reed engages.

Transpose

Bass Clarinet (B♭) is already selected — note names match your written treble-clef part. If your part is in bass clef, switch to Concert Pitch in the dropdown instead.

Reference A

Default is A440. Tap + / to match your ensemble — A441–442 is common in orchestras, A415 for historical pitch.

The bass clarinet transposes like the Bb clarinet — a written C sounds as concert Bb — but the instrument sounds an octave lower than the soprano Bb clarinet. Most bass clarinet music in the US is written in treble clef with Bb transposition, so this tuner is set accordingly. If your part is written in bass clef (common in older editions and some European publications), the note names will not match — switch to Concert Pitch in the dropdown. Bass clarinet intonation has distinct challenges: the low register can go flat in cold conditions or when playing softly with reduced air support. The upper register above the break tends to run sharp on many instruments. Overall pitch is adjusted primarily through the long neck joint and mouthpiece placement. The pitch history display is especially useful here because low notes are slower to speak — you can see whether pitch settles in after the attack, or starts sharp and drops as the reed vibrates into resonance. These patterns are harder to hear in real time and easier to catch on the graph.
