viiø7–I
The viiø7–I progression uses the half-diminished seventh chord on the leading tone as a substitute for the dominant, resolving to the major tonic. The added minor seventh softens the diminished triad's harshness while preserving the strong upward resolution of the leading tone. This voicing appears in jazz as a rootless V9 chord and in classical music as a passing harmony.
